Who Are We

Historic Liberty lives in the heart of Liberty, Missouri. It thrives in the neighborhoods and businesses around the Courthouse Square, along Mill Street, and includes Century Houses throughout the City.

Historic Liberty was established as a non-profit organization in 2004.

Historic Liberty members include all residents and property owners within the neighborhoods and business districts built prior to 1945. Those in the community who pay annual membership dues may vote in Historic Liberty.

Mission

To provide education, resources, support, and direction to Historic Liberty property owners in an effort to enhance preservation activity and shape future development throughout the City of Liberty.

Goals

  • To preserve the integrity of the architecture and character of Historic Liberty.
  • To undertake educational efforts which enhance appreciation and conservation of the unique design heritage of the City of Liberty.
  • To equip individual property owners with the information and knowledge to appropriately restore and preserve their property within Historic Liberty.
  • To partner with Historic Downtown Liberty, Inc and merchants to enhance the vitality of retail business in Historic Liberty.
  • To put Historic Liberty on the map as a "destination city" in the Kansas City metro area.

Services

  • Provide a welcome letter to new residents throughout Historic Liberty with information about downtown businesses, City services, and complimentary car window decals. (In cooperation with Liberty's Preservation Planner and HDLI)
  • Provide a dynamic listing of contractors and vendors who specialize in historic rehab.
  • Sponsor the Preservation Awards presented during May (Historic Preservation Month)).
  • Co-sponsor First Saturday architectural walks (April-Oct) with Liberty's Preservation Planner.
  • Co-sponsor educational seminars and workshops (Nov-March) which teach homeowners how to better maintain their historic property with Liberty's Preservation Planner.
  • Work with Rebuilding Together Liberty and the City of Liberty in assisting residents with maintenance and restoration efforts throughout the older parts of Liberty.
  • Partner with the City and the Liberty Public Schools to provide third-grade walking tours of Liberty.
  • Participate in the Liberty Fall Festival, sponsored by the Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce.
  • Partner with the Corbin Theatre to provide evenings with the Voices of Liberty.
  • Succeeded in placing The Oddfellows Home on the 2006 List of Missouri's Most Endangered Historic Places (in conjunction with Missouri Preservation)

Pending Projects

  • Encourage the development of neighborhood groups throughout Historic Liberty in ways that enhance a sense of community and grass-roots preservation efforts.
  • Provide educational opportunities and printed information to help local realty agents better market properties with distinctive historic character.
  • Provide a monthly e-newsletter with information on renovation topics, highlight landmark preservation projects, share community concerns and publicize events within Historic Liberty.
  • Give voice and energy to community support for the Blueprint for Liberty and make its continued implementation a civic priority within Liberty.
